Welcome to Materiality contemporary fine art in Santa Fe New Mexico!
Materiality is owned by 3 artists, who each contribute a distinctive esthetic to the artwork and the look of the gallery. Our common thread is not only the focus on material and media in our work, but the commitment to a contemporary, clean look in our space. Although we are situated in an old adobe house that dates back to the 1940s, we offer crisp white walls, outstanding full spectrum lighting, thoughtfully curated artwork and a relaxing and unhurried environment in which to contemplate it.
Blair Vaughn-Gruler, Ernst Gruler and Ginnie Cappaert have joined forces to bring the best of what they have of offer to the Canyon Road art district, and beyond.
The Materiality Origin Story:
Add together over 30 years of friendship (going back to Michigan's upper peninsula), a shared passion for the visual arts, 25+ years combined experience as gallerists, a real estate transaction and a full super moon eclipse and voila! Materiality contemporary fine art gallery was born in Santa Fe!
In 2024, after a decade of coming out to Santa Fe to paint for a month each year, while her Wisconsin gallery was closed for the winter, Ginnie Cappaert decided to purchase a second home in Santa Fe.
Meanwhile, after 12 years as GVG Contemporary, Blair Vaughn-Gruler and Ernst Gruler decamped from their gallery location at the corner of Delgado Street and Canyon Road when the covid pandemic hit. After doing business out of their warehouse studio locations for almost 4 years, and while Blair was assisting Ginnie in her house hunting, the former GVG location became available again.
All it took was a full moon eclipse for the trio of artist/gallerists to sketch out a business plan, create their LLC, and detail a partnership agreement that focused on exhibiting Blair and Ginnie's paintings and Ernst's work in multiple genres: fine art furniture, lighting, sculpture and paintings.
Now coming into year three, Materiality and it's three artist owners are enjoying a warm and enthusiastic reception from collectors and friends, old and new. With carefully considered curation, a clean and uncluttered presentation, and the ongoing focus on how material informs meaning, Materiality is a unique addition to the Canyon road art scene.
